Common Types of Natural Disasters

Disasters

Natural disasters are a part of our world. In nature, the art of creation and disintegration is commonly practiced. In one part of the world, sea levels may rise, and in another, a river may dry out. Some countries flourish with greenery, and others experience droughts. The process of growth and dilapidation go hand in hand.  Natural disasters can cause catastrophic damage to the environment, infrastructure and human life. Let’s delve into the most common types of Natural disasters and their impacts.

Earthquakes

Earthquakes occur due to the movement of tectonic plates. There is also the element of a sudden release of energy within rocks beneath the earth’s surface. The impacts of earthquakes are devastating as they damage infrastructure, bridges, and roads, destroying supplies of gas, electricity, and water. It takes a long time to rebuild services that have been damaged. This has a direct effect on communities, as schools and places of worship are also impacted. You can get involved by supporting Muslim communities in thriving again and donating to help build a mosque. Spiritual uplift is all we can count on during such tribulations. Help reinstall hope for those who have been directly impacted and have lost their place of worship.

Wildfires

Wildfires are a phenomenon that takes place in forests, grasslands and bushlands. These are usually triggered by lightning, droughts and human activities. Wildfires are known to destroy forests, homes and infrastructure. When a wildfire occurs for a prolonged period, it can consist of thick smoke that results in air pollution affecting one’s respiratory system. As the nature of wildfires usually takes place in forests, wildlife such as birds and other animals are directly impacted and must flee their homes for safety. In severe cases humans are also at a great risk of breathing in the toxic smoke and will endeavor to relocate for safety purposes.

Volcanic Eruptions

Volcanoes are one of the most common types of natural disasters. They take place when an active volcano begins to erupt molten rock (also known as lava). Ashes and gasses can stretch miles outside the eruption perimeter, causing lava flows that destroy everything in their path. This is also known as Pyroclastic flows, whereby hot gas, which is fast-moving and volcanic matter, travels rapidly, clouding an entire city or town.  Another major danger is the ash clouds that form and impact the clean air. If inhaled, it can directly affect the respiratory system.  Usually, in the event of any volcanic activity, the population is displaced, suffering long-term effects on agriculture and water sources.

Floods

Floods are one of the most common natural disasters of today. A flood arises due to multiple factors, including heavy rainfall, ocean waves approaching shores, rapid snow melting, natural watercourse overflows, and dam or levee breaks. The release of water from reservoirs, canals and dams can also cause flooding. The impact of a flood is always devastating regardless of how much circumference it covers. In extreme cases, the outcome consists of the displacement of innocent civilians and loss of life.

Droughts

Droughts occur when there are prolonged periods of abnormally low rainfall, which inevitably lead to water shortages. Atmospheric conditions such as climate change, ocean temperatures, and changes in local landscapes are factors that ignite a drought. Droughts are also associated with very little to no water in rivers, lakes and reservoirs. The impacts of a drought severely affect civilians, causing loss of livestock, failure of crops, and food shortages that lead to malnourished and weak humans and animals.

Ultimately natural disasters can be devastating for communities; unfortunately, though, they are unavoidable. This is why it’s so important for the world to club together to help rebuild communities following these disasters.
